LAHORE: The Home Department has declared an emergency warning throughout the entire province because of increasing incidents of fraud, which involve WhatsApp hacking and impersonation.
The Punjab Home Department advises all administrative departments and law enforcement agencies to maintain their operations at maximum security status.
The warning specifically requires senior bureaucrats, police officials, and field formations to maintain watchfulness because of recent cases that showed unauthorized individuals accessing WhatsApp accounts used by active government officers.
Officials reported that cybercriminals have been using these accounts to contact their colleagues and subordinates while sending fake messages that request immediate financial help.
Authorities further noted a significant increase in such scams because fraudsters use publicly accessible information, which includes names and designations, and photographs, to develop highly realistic digital identities.
The impersonation tactics that criminals use have made it more difficult to identify fraudulent messages because they create more trustworthy content.
The advisory requires all departments to implement strict security measures while establishing advanced cybersecurity knowledge programs to defend against future security breaches, which would endanger official communication systems.
