YouTube launches voluntary exit program amid restructuring

ISLAMABAD: YouTube has launched a “voluntary exit program” for its U.S.-based employees, offering severance packages as part of a broader internal restructuring. The announcement was shared with staff in a memo by CEO Neil Mohan on Wednesday.

In the memo, Mohan outlined that YouTube will now operate under three separate product divisions, each reporting directly to him. The first, Subscription Products, will oversee YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, and the company’s over-the-top (OTT) services.

The second division, Viewer Products, will handle the user experience in YouTube’s main app, YouTube Kids, Learning, and Trust & Safety segments. The third, Creator and Community Products, will focus on supporting creators and increasing engagement across the platform.

YouTube stressed that while structural changes are underway, no roles are being eliminated. The voluntary exit program is intended to provide flexibility for employees considering leaving rather than implementing furloughs.

The announcement coincides with Alphabet’s third-quarter earnings release on Wednesday. YouTube’s advertising revenue reached $10.26 billion, reflecting a 15% year-over-year growth, highlighting the platform’s strong financial performance despite internal adjustments.

Industry observers note that the restructuring is consistent with Alphabet’s broader strategy of rapidly adapting to viewer and creator demands while improving operations and empowering teams.

While the voluntary exit program marks a change in YouTube’s internal structure, the company insists that the move is not related to cost reductions or layoffs. Employees who choose to leave will reportedly receive severance benefits, although the company did not disclose specific terms.

With its revenue growth and clear focus on core product areas, YouTube appears to be positioning itself for greater operational agility and long-term growth. Restructuring teams will likely begin implementing new strategies in the coming months.
