KARACHI: Cyclone Shakti strengthened to a cyclonic storm and is currently only 360 kilometers from the port city Karachi, while meteorologists issue flash warnings for heavy rain, high-speed winds, and rough seas.
The strong tempest is likely to pound Thatta, Badin, Tharparkar, and some interior districts of Sindh, endangering lives and property.
Met Office issued a warning that sea winds may be as high as 125 km/h, and all fishing activities were banned instantly and firmly. Heavy rain is forecast in Karachi and Sindh, and the cyclone is expected to gain strength in the next few days.
The sea has been labeled extremely hazardous between October 3 and 6, and emergency agencies have been directed to remain on maximum alert.
People in lower Sindh are advised of gusty windstorms and lightning that may destroy flimsy structures like roofs and walls of kacha houses, electric poles, billboards, cars, and solar panels.
Meteorologists note that the deep depression in the northeast Arabian Sea has intensified very quickly into Cyclone Shakti, which is now west-northwest moving, while a westerly wave influencing the northern areas will further intensify by the evening of Saturday.
Partly cloudy skies are forecast for most of Sindh, but scattered rain, windstorms, and thundershowers may lash Tharparkar, Badin, Mithi, Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Sujawal, Karachi, Thatta, Jamshoro, Khairpur, Padidan, Sanghar, Sukkur, Naushero Feroze, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, and nearby areas. Citizens are advised to stay alert and make preparations for rough weather.
