ISLAMABAD: The Meteorological Department has dismissed the news circulating on social media of an unusual or record-breaking cold in the country.
The department said that scientific data and climate trends do not support any such prediction.
According to the spokesperson, the analysis of sea surface temperature and the effects of La Niña shows that the intensity of the winter season will be moderate across the country, including Sindh.
The Meteorological Department clarified that the winter season forecasts from December to February are made using systems developed in collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
According to the latest assessments, temperatures are likely to be slightly above normal and rainfall is likely to be slightly above normal in most parts of the country during this period.
The statement said that a weak to moderate La Niña is present in the Pacific region, which usually reduces the intensity of cold systems in South Asia and Pakistan.
As a result, the westerly winds will not be able to fully reach the northern and western hilly regions of the country, leading to a reduction in snowfall and rainfall in these areas, while a slight change is expected in the plains of Punjab and Sindh.
The Meteorological Department has directed the citizens to get weather information only from the Meteorological Department website and verified sources.
The department warned that spreading unverified weather claims can create unnecessary fear and misunderstanding among the public.
