LAHORE: The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave alert across the state, warning of unusually high temperatures in the coming days. All commissioners and deputy commissioners have been directed to remain on high alert along with relevant departments including school education, health, transport, local government and Rescue 1122.
According to PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia, temperatures are expected to increase significantly in major cities and plains of Punjab from May 15 to May 19, with the mercury forecast to rise by 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal. The public has been appealed to take precautionary measures as extreme heat can increase the risk of heatstroke and related diseases.
DG Kathia said, “All district administrations should ensure adequate supply of clean drinking water in public places, and hospitals and mobile health units should be fully equipped to provide immediate medical assistance for heat-related emergencies.”
As per the directions of the Punjab Chief Minister, the PDMA has mobilized local administrations to prioritize public safety and ensure community preparedness during the heat wave. Special attention is being paid to vulnerable populations including children and the elderly.
Citizens have been advised to avoid outdoor activities during the afternoon hours, wear light-colored clothing, keep their heads covered and minimize unnecessary travel. Those working outdoors have been asked to take appropriate precautions against the risk of heat.
Meanwhile, the PDMA has also confirmed that a westerly wind system is likely to enter Punjab by the evening of May 19, leading to rain in several districts on May 19 and 20. This change in weather is expected to bring some relief after the intense heat wave.
