THERAN: Amid the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel, a commercial ship bound for India has been targeted in the Strait of Hormuz, which some experts are seeing as a possible response from Iran.
According to the international news agency Reuters, the Thai cargo ship Mayuri Nari was targeted with a projectile in the important sea passage of the Strait of Hormuz. The ship was carrying goods to the Indian city of Gujarat.
According to reports, the ship caught fire after the attack and its engine room was severely damaged, but several crew members were evacuated to a safe location.
According to experts, the incident shows the growing tension in the region and the complications in Iran-India relations.
They say that Iran is angry with India’s policy in which it simultaneously claims to maintain relations with Iran while in practice is considered close to Israel.
Analysts say that Iran is considering some of its recent actions as part of an Indian alignment against it, which is why targeting a commercial ship bound for India is being seen as a strong message.
