LONDON: Doctor Suhail Anjum, who left a patient on an operating table to engage in sex with a nurse, has been cleared to pursue his medical career in the UK.
Consultant anaesthetist Suhail Anjum, 44, was found ‘in a compromising position’ with another nurse at Tameside General Hospital in 2023 during an operation.
Dr. Anjum graduated in Lahore in 2004 and went to the UK in 2011, working in Bristol, Milton Keynes, and Dartford before joining the Tameside and Glossop Integrated Trust in 2015.
He resigned from the trust in 2024 and worked in Liverpool before going back to Pakistan.
A disciplinary panel has now determined that Dr Anjum’s ‘deplorable’ behavior constituted serious misconduct, but decided that there was a ‘very low risk’ of repetition.
It has been decided that a written warning must stay on the doctor’s register for two years, stating that his fitness to practice as a doctor was not diminished.
Dr. Sohail Anjum said that when the incident happened, he and his wife were struggling to cope as a couple due to the birth of their daughter. It was a difficult time.
‘I have let everybody down,’ he said.
He told the tribunal that he needed a break that day to rest and left the patient and went to another operating theater in the hospital.
The doctor admitted that his behavior could have put the patient’s life in danger. While apologizing for his behavior, he assured that this mistake would not happen again.
