RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Municipalities and Housing has introduced tough new penalties to improve hygiene and safety standards in the food sector, with the heaviest fine of 5,000 Saudi riyals (Rs. 3.75 lakh) imposed for smoking in food outlets.
The regulations, which aim to curb unhealthy practices and ensure consumer safety, outline penalties for both workers and businesses. Food handlers can be fined 1,000 Saudi riyals (Rs. 75,000) for not wearing a face mask or leaving their heads uncovered while preparing food. Delivery staff will face a fine of 500 Saudi riyals (Rs. 37,543) for not wearing their company’s official uniform.
Establishments that sell frozen juices fresh will be fined 1,000 Saudi riyals, while workers caught touching their faces, noses or spitting inside food outlets could face fines of up to 2,000 Saudi riyals (Rs. 1.50 lakh).
The ministry stressed that these measures are part of a broader effort to protect public health, ensure transparency in the food chain, and maintain consumer confidence. Businesses and employees have been urged to fully comply with the rules to avoid fines.
