JADDAH: Dr. Muhammad Umer Chapra, a prominent Pakistani-Saudi economist and one of the founders of Islamic economics and banking, has passed away at the age of 93.
Dr. Muhammad Umer Chapra served as a senior economic advisor to the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for a long time.
In recognition of his services, he was also awarded the King Faisal International Award in 1990.
Dr. Muhammad Umer Chapra was a prominent thinker in Islamic economics and Islamic history. His famous books include Muslim Civilization – Why Its Decline and Why Its Reformation (this is the Urdu translation of his famous English book, Muslim Civilization).
Similarly, Islam and the Economic Challenge and The Future of Economics: An Islamic Perspective are also among his famous books.
