WASHINGTON: During his State of the Union address, former U.S. President Donald Trump misspoke, saying that “35 million people said the PM of Pakistan would have died if it were not for my involvement” in last year’s brief conflict with India.
Trump appeared to mean that the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had warned him that 35 million people could have been affected if he had not intervened. The armed conflict between the two neighbors took place from May 7–10 last year and ended quickly in a ceasefire.
This address marks Trump’s first State of the Union of his second term, focusing on his administration’s assessment of the country and legislative priorities, as required by the Constitution.
The speech also comes amid rising tensions with Iran, ongoing negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine, and domestic concerns over potential unrest following ICE immigration raids and related counter-protests.
