Saudi Supreme Court calls for Ramadan moon sighting on Feb 28

RIYADH: The Saudi Supreme Court has appealed to the public to search for the Ramadan moon on the evening of February 28.

According to Arab media, the court directed that witnesses report to the nearest court in case of sighting the moon. The statement stressed that the moon must be seen with the naked eye and that the testimonies must be in accordance with Islamic principles.

Witnesses can also submit their sightings to the local court and the sighting committee.

The final announcement regarding the sighting of the moon will be made after the testimonies are confirmed.

Astronomers have predicted that Ramadan in Saudi Arabia is likely to begin on February 28 and the first fast will be on March 1.

Notably, if confirmed, it will be the first time in 30 years that the Islamic and Gregorian months will begin on the same date.
