GENEVA: A Swiss appeals court has overturned Tariq Ramadan’s previous acquittal, convicting the 62-year-old Islamic scholar of rape and sexual assault.
The court sentenced Ramadan to three years in prison, with two years suspended, for the 2008 attack on a woman in a Geneva (Switzerland) hotel.
Ramadan, grandson of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hasan al-Banna, has consistently denied the charges.
The case was based on accusations by a Swiss woman, known as “Brigitte,” who testified that Ramadan subjected her to rape and violent sex acts. Her lawyer described the incidents as “torture and barbarism.”
This conviction follows previous accusations by four French women in 2016. Ramadan had placed his professorship at the University of Oxford on hold and later retired early, citing health issues, after admitting to extramarital sex in 2018.
The court’s decision, dated August 28, was made public recently, marking a significant development in the high-profile case.
