Tragedy at Sea: Dozens feared dead in Libya boat disaster

NEW YORK: The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a subsidiary of the United Nations, has confirmed that 53 people have died or are missing after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Libya.

An IOM spokesperson said in a statement that the boat capsized on February 6 near Zarawa in Libya, after which only two Nigerian women were rescued during a search operation.

According to one survivor of the accident, she lost her husband, while another woman said that her two children are also missing after the accident.

According to the survivors, the boat left the Libyan region of Zawya on February 5 and was carrying Africans.

According to IOM data, at least 375 migrants were reported dead or missing in January alone.
