Trump declares 25% tariff on Indian imports starting August 1

President Trump warns India of tariffs over Russian oil imports

NEW YORK: The President of the United States of America (USA), Donald Trump, said that India has to pay a 25% tariff on goods coming from India to the  USA.

U.S. President in a post shared on the social platform ‘Truth Social’ said that “While India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country,” Trump wrote. “INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST.”

Trump slammed India’s trade policies, saying it enforces “strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary trade barriers” and maintains “among the highest tariffs in the world.”

Trump referred to India’s defense alliances with Russia, but he did not specify the type or extent of the extra penalty. “India has consistently purchased the great majority of its military weapons from Russia,” he continued.

“WE HAVE A MASSIVE TRADE DEFICIT WITH INDIA!!!” he said in another post shared on the platform.

The announcement has not yet received an official reaction from the Indian government. Trade analysts, however, anticipate that New Delhi would challenge the levy decision diplomatically or at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
