US warplanes deployed to Greenland amid NORAD coordination

WASHINGTON: US warplanes have begun arriving in Greenland.

The US and Canadian defense agencies NORAD said in a statement on social media that US warplanes will soon arrive at the US military base in Greenland.

According to the defense agency NORAD, the Greenland government has also been informed of the plan.

NORAD says that there is coordination with the Danish government in delivering the new batch of US aircraft, and US forces have the necessary diplomatic permissions.

It should be noted that Greenland is actually an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, the US and Denmark signed the Greenland Defense Agreement.

Under the agreement, the US had pledged to protect Greenland from possible aggression, while the US and Canada signed the NORAD defense agreement at the beginning of the Cold War in 1958. NORAD’s main purpose is to provide timely information about the launch of ballistic missiles.
