Govt to launch subsidized electric bikes scheme

Free electric bikes announced for THSES students

ISLAMABAD: The Cabinet’s Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Tuesday endorsed a summary presented by the Ministry of Industries and Production for the implementation of a subsidy scheme for the promotion of electric bikes and rickshaws adoption.

The ECC session, presided over by Federal Minister for Finance Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, acceded to the summary.

A provision of Rs. 9 billion has already been made in the budget for FY 2025-26 to cover this project. The scheme also involves the issuance of free electric bikes to outstanding students of government colleges.

According to the sanctioned plan, 116,000 electric bikes and 3,170 electric rickshaws/loaders will be launched in two phases. Of these, in the first phase, due to be launched by the Prime Minister soon, 40,000 electric bikes and 1,000 electric rickshaws/loaders will be brought to the road.
