LAHORE: The provincial capital has made a significant step towards eco-friendly public transport by receiving 11 new electric buses from China to maintain a clean and green environment within the city.
Transport department officials said 16 more buses were expected to arrive in Lahore from Karachi in a few days. A total of 27 buses are going to be introduced in the first phase as part of the Punjab pilot project.
According to the sources, the Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is going to inaugurate the electric bus service on February 19, 2025.
The charging station for these electric buses will be placed in the Green Town area of Lahore. With a capacity of 60 passengers each, the electric buses promise a fresh, green eco-friendly option for commuting.
The transport company implementing the project will give over all the buses to the Punjab Transport Department for operation. Besides, tenders have also been issued for electric bus services in Faisalabad and Bahawalpur, indicating further plans to expand the initiative within Punjab.
Last year, the Punjab government decided to buy 300 electric buses for the provincial capital Lahore, as informed by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb during a meeting convened by Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz to review the progress of the 33 special projects in Punjab.
During the meeting, Punjab’s Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz was told of plans for the acquisition of 300 electric buses for Lahore, signifying a hefty investment into the public transport system of Lahore.
