ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has increased the price of electricity for consumers across the country, including Karachi, after which consumers will have to bear an additional burden in the bills of the current month.
According to the notification issued by NEPRA, the price of electricity has been increased by 34 paisa per unit. This increase was made as part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment for May 2026, which will be applied in the electricity bills of July.
The notification states that the increase in electricity prices will be applied to all consumers across the country. Consumers in Karachi will also not be exempted from this increase and K-Electric consumers will also have to pay additional amount in the bills of July.
According to sources, the Central Power Purchasing Agency had requested to increase electricity by 82 paisa per unit as part of the May fuel adjustment, however, NEPRA approved the increase of 34 paisa per unit after hearing the application and reviewing the data.
This decision by the government in the first month of the new financial year has become a new problem for electricity consumers. Electricity bills have already become a big problem for consumers under the pressure of inflation, gas prices, essential commodities and other expenses.
According to experts, the increases under fuel adjustment are temporary in nature, but they directly affect the monthly bills of consumers.
Citizens say that the repeated increase in electricity prices is badly affecting the domestic budget and the government will have to make permanent reforms in the energy sector to provide real relief to the people.
