Govt considering installation of prepaid meters to curb electricity theft

No balance no electricity, govt introduces new prepaid electricity system

MULTAN: Federal Minister for Energy, Awais Leghari, on Monday announced that the government is considering the installation of a prepaid meter system to tackle electricity theft.

Addressing the media in Multan, Leghari emphasized that the company will offer better facilities to consumers. He said that a system similar to prepaid mobile phone billing could be an effective solution for electricity theft.

“The loopholes in the power sector should be addressed and the introduction of prepaid meters would not only curb theft but also improve billing transparency,” he highlighted.

While talking to the media, the minister mentioned Rs45 billion in relief provided by the Punjab government, adding that discussions are ongoing between the government and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in this regard.

The introduction of prepaid meters is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the power sector and addressing the widespread issue of electricity theft across the country.
