Punjab govt launches Rs4.5 billion development project in Murree

MURREE: The Punjab government has launched an ambitious Rs. 4.5 billion development plan in Murree to modernize the hill station’s infrastructure and the boost it will give to tourism.

It is expected to be completed within 18 months with the government chief minister overseeing this project. Kamran Lashari, the Director-General of the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA), says that the main idea of the project is restoring the old sites and providing better facilities for visitors.

Key restoration will be undertaken for Mall Road and General Post Office (GPO) to blend traditional appeal with contemporary facilities.

The government is also planning to launch a glass train service in Murree offering tourists an experience of travel like never before. The glass train project is committed to sustainable development to protect Murree’s natural environment while raising its global importance as one of the prime tourist attractions.

Meanwhile, the WCLA is restoring the historical sites in Punjabsuch as Sufi shrines, gurdwaras, and churches. Work has been in hand for enabling student visits to heritage sites, with the idea of promoting cultural awareness among all.

The increasing numbers of international tourists, Sikh visitors included, have created hope that such initiatives will stimulate the economic growth of Pakistan and strengthen its hand as one of the big names in the travel world.

Other developments in Murree include setting up a new police station and subdivision, a new water supply scheme, and 3.5 lakh fruit trees planted.
