Punjab govt launches door-to-door insulin supply

LAHORE: The door-to-door insulin service has formally been initiated in Rawalpindi, as registration of diabetes patients has started in the region as part of the healthcare initiative of the Punjab government.

As per the District Health Authority, the insulin has already reached the homes of 35 registered Type-1 diabetes patients. Such a project is conducted to ensure that the insulin reaches the patients continually, as it is the only means for them to survive.

According to health experts, an awareness campaign is also being carried out. The aim is to make the general public aware of diabetes. “Type 1 Diabetes is a condition where the body stops producing insulin.

Insulin is a hormonal substance that helps turn blood sugar into energy. Without that insulin, blood sugar levels go high and can be dangerous,” said Dr. Mahaboob Khan.

“Actually, Type-2 diabetes can be managed by controlling one’s diet and taking regular exercise. Moreover, one does not necessarily require injections of insulin regularly if he or she is a Type-2 diabetic,” said District Health Officer (Preventive) Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Jawad.

“We are conducting patient identification, validation, registration, and the distribution of insulin strictly according to the standard operating procedures by our health department teams,” he said.

The monitoring of the cold chain and the maintenance of records are also being ensured for the door-to-door insulin distribution process.
