England Flooding

In recent days, storms have also caused flooding in other parts of Europe.

Following heavy rain, major rivers across the United Kingdom flooded on Friday, prompting the government to issue more than 300 flood warnings, travel operators to announce significant disruption, and around 1,000 homes to be damaged.

A series of storms in recent weeks resulted in prolonged rainfall that began on Thursday and quickly caused already-swollen rivers and waterways across England and Wales to burst their banks.

In recent days, the storms have also caused flooding in other parts of Europe.

The flooding of the River Trent in central England prompted the local authority to declare a major incident. The London Fire Brigade said it had to escort around 50 people to safety late Thursday after a canal in the capital’s east overflowed.

“We have woken up to, as many people will see, a very wet situation across the country,” Caroline Douglass, the Environment Agency’s director in charge of flood management, told the BBC.

According to Douglass, around 1,000 homes have been flooded so far. Great Western Railways announced the closure of three lines in the country’s south. Roads were also closed in the worst-affected areas.

More rain was predicted for Friday, though not at the same intensity as seen overnight, with drier weather following.
