Trump Return Transatlantic Rift Deepens as German President Warns of Major Policy Shift

Trump return transatlantic rift

Germany has raised serious concerns after the Trump return transatlantic rift became a key issue in global politics. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the new US political phase could deeply affect relations between Europe and the United States.

Speaking at an event in Berlin, he warned that the Trump return transatlantic rift may create long-term changes. He compared this shift to the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which reshaped Europe’s foreign policy.

Steinmeier said there may be “no going back” to old relations after Donald Trump starts his second term. According to him, Germany must rethink its global strategy in response to the Trump return transatlantic rift.

He stressed that Germany should reduce its heavy dependence on the United States, especially in defence and technology sectors. He added that lessons learned from past reliance on Russia should guide future policies.

Germany is already working to build alternatives to US-led technology systems. Officials believe digital platforms and social media can influence not only foreign policy but also domestic politics.

The president also pointed to recent tensions between the Pentagon and AI company Anthropic as a warning sign. He said Europe should see this as a chance to grow its own technology sector.

Steinmeier highlighted that Europe has strong talent, markets, and ethical standards. He urged leaders to use these strengths to respond effectively to the Trump return transatlantic rift.
