ISLAMABAD: Senior advocate Supreme Court Akhtar Hussain has resigned as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) over controversies regarding judicial appointments.
Hussain submitted his resignation to the chairman of JCP, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, wherein he expressed concerns over present controversies surrounding the process of judicial appointments.
In his letter, the advocate Supreme Court stated, “The Pakistan Bar Council unanimously nominated me thrice as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan and continued to discharge my responsibilities to the best of my abilities.”
However, he said, on present controversies with regard to judicial appointments, “I am unable to continue and, hereby, resign as being member of J.C.P. and sending a copy of this resignation to the Pakistan Bar Council for making new nomination.”
He also expressed gratitude to members of the judicial commission and assured them that “he will continue to make all efforts for the development and independence of judicial and democratic institutions.”
It may be noted that the JCP has recently appointed six new judges to the apex court amid a boycott by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers and two senior SC judges.
