AJK police chief replaced after violent protests

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has replaced the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) days after violent protests against high electricity bills and flour.

According to a notification issued by the Establishment Division, Abdul Jabbar, a BS-20 officer currently serving in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), had replaced Dr Sohail Habib Tajik, a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP).

After being moved, Abdul Jabbar was made available to the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) for his appointment as the IGP.

A wheel jam and shutter-down strike across the region resulted in violent battles between police and rights movement activists in Azad Kashmir, which left at least one police official dead and numerous more injured.
