Flash flood alert issued in KP as heavy rains raise risk in upper districts

Flood risk in major cities as NDMA warns of severe weather

PESHAWAR: The risk of flash floods has increased due to heavy rains in the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to details, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert in view of the increasing risk of flash floods (sudden floods) due to heavy rains in the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Following the forecast of the Meteorological Department, there is a risk of flooding in the rivers and canals of Swat, Upper and Lower Dir and Upper and Lower Chitral. The PDMA has directed the concerned district administration to take emergency measures and ordered them to be ready to deal with the flood situation in the low-lying areas. The public has also been appealed to be cautious in the current situation.

The administration has directed Rescue 1122 and Civil Defense to remain on high alert and ensure the availability of all necessary resources.

The PDMA has ordered that sensitive areas and vulnerable populations should be identified immediately and advance warning should be provided to people living near rivers and streams. It has also been emphasized to ensure timely evacuation of the population from dangerous areas in any emergency situation.

Furthermore, district authorities have been directed to provide food, medicine and accommodation facilities in relief camps and to restrict traffic movement near low-lying areas and streams.

The PDMA has also clarified that in case of road closures or waterlogging due to rains, immediate rehabilitation measures should be taken and emergency equipment should be moved to sensitive areas in advance so that timely medical assistance and relief can be provided to the victims.
