Hotel partially sealed in Hunza amid sewage pollution of Attabad lake

GILGIT: After a video went viral on Social media, the Environmental Protection Agency and the district administration have sealed a portion of the hotel in Hunza.

Foreign travel vlogger George Buckley claimed that the hotel was discharging sewage directly into Attabad Lake in a video shared on his Instagram handle.

The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) government acted quickly after the video went viral, sending an EPA team to visit the Attabad Lake location.

There are several resorts and hotels that are connected to the lake. The inappropriate disposal of garbage from these hotels concerns the local population.

They are also concerned that household trash is finding its way into the lakes in the absence of a sewage infrastructure.

Moreover, this trash enters the Indus River and Attabad Lake. “Officials have arrived at the hotel,” Buckley said in a recent Instagram video, adding that there are no records that refute his allegations that the hotel dumped trash into the lake. “Part of the hotel has been sealed off,” he stated.

According to Buckley, the resort’s ecologically damaging actions were brought to his attention by residents, who also drew attention to the obvious contrast between the lake’s clean and polluted portions.
