ISLAMABAD: A top Islamabad police officer, SP Industrial Area Adeel Akbar, reportedly shot himself on duty near the Serena checkpoint on Thursday.
As per sources, SP Adeel Akbar received serious injuries and was taken to PIMS Hospital by police personnel, where he was declared dead while undergoing treatment.
Police authorities have opened an inquiry to figure out the details of the incident. Evidence is being gathered from the spot.
A police spokesperson stated the facts would be released once the investigation is conducted. The reason behind the incident is still not clear, officials noted.
The SP was reportedly on security for the Pakistan and South African cricket team close to the Serena Hotel when he allegedly took a rifle from a junior police officer and shot himself.
SP Adeel Akbar allegedly grabbed a gun from his gunman and shot himself, sources said. His gunman and other police officers who were present at the scene have been arrested.
Sources say that SP I-9 Adeel Akbar shot himself in the chest with a pistol following a telephone call.
The authorities are probing who made the last call to the SP, while efforts are being made to recover data from his cell phone.
Sources said the SP’s operator has also been arrested. Hospital authorities confirmed SP Industrial Area Adeel Akbar died from injuries inflicted by a gunshot.
Inspector General (IG) Islamabad Police Ali Nasir Rizvi himself visited PIMS Hospital to monitor the post-mortem proceedings. The IG also received detailed briefings from the doctors about the deceased officer’s condition.
Sources say that SP Adeel Akbar had also worked in Balochistan earlier. He was a 46th Common officer and belonged to Kamonki.
