ISLAMABAD: The government has prepared a plan to activate 30 free Wi-Fi hotspots by December 2025 to improve public internet access in Islamabad.

The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT, said that work on the project is progressing rapidly and the hotspots will be activated within the stipulated time.

According to officials, this move is a major step towards strengthening digital infrastructure across the country under the government’s policy.

Under the project, hotspots will be installed in important places of the federal capital, central markets, public places and government buildings so that citizens, students and employees can get easy access to high-speed internet.

NTC further said that it is currently providing internet, communication and cybersecurity services to more than 3,000 government and private institutions in more than 100 cities of the country.

According to officials, the free Wi-Fi project in Islamabad will prove to be an important step towards making the city technology-friendly and expanding the scope of digital services.

Earlier, it was briefed in the meeting that the CDA’s technical team will fully support the NTC in completing the project, while the operation and maintenance of the system will be entrusted to the NTC.

Officials say that in the future, the goal has been set to make Islamabad the first complete “Free Wi-Fi City” of Pakistan.
