ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Wednesday introduced a regulatory framework for the provision of free public Wi-Fi services in Islamabad.
According to a document issued by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, the regulatory framework outlines the responsibilities of licensed operators, data handling protocols, and public awareness measures, ensuring both access and protection for users.
The framework allows CVAS (Class Value Added Services) and local loop license holders to deploy Wi-Fi hotspots in Islamabad without additional licensing fees.
Additionally, unlicensed ISM (Industrial, Scientific and Medical) radio bands will be provided free of charge to entities already licensed by the PTA to set up public Wi-Fi hotspots.
According to the document, the deployment of public Wi-Fi services will depend on the commercial viability of the respective licensees. The PTA has also ordered service providers to maintain strict confidentiality of user data and logs.
This further emphasizes the importance of user privacy and calls on companies to conduct awareness campaigns to educate users about safe and responsible internet usage.
