Japan’s support has been pivotal in advancing the cause of polio eradication in Pakistan.
In a significant stride towards the global fight against polio, Japan has announced a generous grant of $3.62 million to support Pakistan‘s polio eradication program. The grant will be utilized for the procurement of essential oral polio vaccines, aiming to further strengthen the ongoing efforts to eliminate polio in the country.
Last year, Pakistan reported six polio cases, making it one of the two remaining countries globally where polio remains endemic. The grant from Japan comes as a crucial boost to the Pakistan Polio Programme, which plans to use the funds to procure over 21 million doses of vaccines, supporting robust polio campaigns throughout 2024.
With the focus on specific regions where polio cases persist, the Government of Pakistan, along with its partners, is gearing up for an aggressive plan of activities in 2024. National immunization drives aim to reach over 44 million children under the age of five, with the active involvement of more than 370,000 frontline workers, predominantly women, who play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the Polio Programme.
Health Minister Dr. Nadeem Jan expressed determination in the face of challenges, stating, “Despite the challenges, Pakistan will remain relentless in our drive to put an end to polio in the next year.” He emphasized the collaborative efforts with partners and the emergency focus to overcome remaining challenges and reach all children.
Japan’s support has been pivotal in advancing the cause of polio eradication in Pakistan. ITO Takeshi, Charge d’ Affaires ad interim of Japan to Pakistan, applauded the progress made in controlling the spread of the poliovirus. He expressed respect for polio workers and law enforcement agencies, acknowledging their dedicated mission for humanity.

Highlighting the importance of a strong commitment by Pakistani leadership, Takeshi stated, “Japan would like to renew its commitment to continuing its efforts toward the ultimate goal of polio eradication by promoting routine immunization.”
This new funding adds to Japan’s continuous support to the Polio Eradication program since 1996, with a total contribution of approximately US$ 242.16 million. The grant reflects Japan’s commitment to global health and underscores the collective efforts to achieve a polio-free world.
