Army chief pardons 20 May 9 suspects

ISLAMABAD: 20 suspects in May 9 cases under the custody of the army have been released, the Attorney General informed the Supreme Court in writing.

Eight people from Rawalpindi were sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment each, three from Lahore and five from Gujranwala were also sentenced to one-year rigorous imprisonment each.

Those released included three from Dir and one from Mardan, all of whom were released on April 6 and 7. None of the convicts had completed the sentence.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) made the concession before Eid-ul-Fitr, as well as a list of 20 PTI workers who were released from military custody. All were sentenced to one year in prison.

But Army Chief General Asim Munir waived the remaining sentence of about two months.
