RAWALPINDI: Military courts have handed over jail sentences to another 60 civilians including Imran Khan’s nephew Hassan Niazi for their involvement in the cases related to the May 9, 2023 incidents, the military’s media wing said on Thursday.
Today’s convictions came a week after 25 civilians were handed prison terms ranging from two to ten years over the same May 9 events, in which military installations were attacked nationwide.
The convictions came after the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench conditionally allowed military courts to pronounce reserved verdicts of 85 civilians trialed for their alleged involvement in the May 9 riots.
Incarcerated former prime minister Imran Khan’s nephew Hassan Khan Niazi, who was handed into military custody in August last year, was among the 60 people sent on rigorous imprisonment ranging from two to ten years.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), military courts have concluded the trials of those accused of the May 9 riots under the relevant laws.
“The Field General Court Martial has promulgated the punishments to the following remaining 60 culprits after examining all evidence, ensuring the provision of all legal rights to the convicts, completion of due process, and the appropriate legal proceedings,” the statement read.
The military’s press release reiterated that “all convicts retain the right to appeal” and other legal recourses, as guaranteed by the Constitution and law.
“The nation, government, and the armed forces remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that the inviolable writ of the state is maintained,” it added.
Following the conviction of 25 civilians on December 21, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union (EU) raised serious concerns over the sentencing of the civilians by the military courts, adding that the military trials were against international laws and obligations.
Responding to the questions, the Foreign Office on Tuesday said that the convictions were made under a law enacted by the parliament and in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
