OSLO: The Nobel Institute has rejected Imran Khan’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing it as a political ploy aimed at influencing Pakistani voters in Norway.
Christian Berg Harpviken, the institute’s director, expressed strong reservations about the nomination being publicized before an official announcement, stating it was done for political purposes.
This move is unprecedented, as it’s the first time a political leader’s Nobel nomination has been used in such a manner, potentially damaging the credibility of the Nobel Prize.
The nomination was announced by Norway’s Centre Party, sparking mixed reactions. However, the Nobel Institute emphasized that the nomination and selection process follows strict and transparent regulations, and using it for political gain is unacceptable.
It’s worth noting that Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize previously, in 2019, for his efforts to promote peace in South Asia
