KARACHI: In July 2024, the nation’s total power generation saw a modest year-on-year (YoY) increase of 0.3%, reaching 14,880 Gigawatt hours (GWh) compared to 14,839 GWh in July 2023.
According to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), there was a notable month-on-month (MoM) rise of 10.5% from the 13,461 GWh generated in June 2024.
This growth was driven by several energy sources, with coal, gas, RLNG, imports from Iran, bagasse, and solar energy all showing YoY increases of 21.2%, 4.5%, 1.8%, 66.4%, 32.6%, and 46.3%, respectively.
However, some energy sources experienced declines. Hydel, RFO (residual fuel oil), nuclear, and wind power production fell by 3.2%, 65.4%, 5.6%, and 18.9% YoY, respectively.
In the energy mix, hydropower remained the largest contributor, providing 35.9% of total electricity generation in July 2024. RLNG followed with a 20.0% share, while coal, nuclear, and gas contributed 17.8%, 13.4%, and 7.9%, respectively.
