Pakistan & Russia Eye Deeper Energy Cooperation During High-Level Meeting in Moscow

Moscow — In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties, Ambassador Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Foreign Affairs, met with First Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation, Pavel Sorokin, during his two-day official visit to Moscow.

The meeting focused on enhancing energy cooperation, a key pillar in the Pakistan-Russia relationship. Ambassador Fatemi expressed satisfaction over the progress made in energy collaboration and voiced confidence in the potential for further expansion in this vital sector. He thanked the Russian government for its continued support in helping ensure Pakistan’s energy security.

Highlighting the dynamic engagement between both governments and private sectors, the SAPM underscored that energy remains a top priority in bilateral cooperation. He welcomed the ongoing dialogue and collaboration, which has seen marked improvement in recent years.

Deputy Minister Pavel Sorokin, who previously visited Pakistan in February 2025 and met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to deepening energy ties. He identified hydropower, LPG, and modernization of oil refineries as promising areas for future cooperation and reiterated Russia’s interest in strengthening energy partnerships.

Sorokin also emphasized the importance of the upcoming 10th session of the Pakistan-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, which will be hosted in Islamabad later this year. Energy collaboration is expected to feature prominently on the agenda.

The meeting was described as highly constructive, allowing both sides to explore mutual interests and lay the groundwork for broader, long-term cooperation in the energy sector.
