KARACHI: On Monday, an international flight was forced to make an emergency landing at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan, due to a medical emergency onboard.
The flight from Sharjah to Dhaka was diverted to Karachi after a passenger’s health worsened mid-air.
According to sources, the flight pilot promptly sought permission from Air Traffic Control (ATC) for an emergency landing, which was granted.
The flight then made a priority landing at Karachi airport, where a medical team from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was waiting to assist.
Tragically, upon examination, the medical team found that the passenger had already passed away. The flight was grounded at Karachi airport for two hours before departing again at 6:15 am, continuing its journey to Dhaka.
This incident is the second recent emergency landing due to a passenger’s health issue. On April 3, a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from Karachi to Toronto made an emergency landing at Oslo International Airport in Norway after a passenger’s health deteriorated mid-flight. In that case, the ill passenger was left behind in Oslo, and the flight continued to Toronto.
These incidents highlight the importance of emergency medical preparedness and response in aviation, as well as the challenges of handling medical emergencies at high altitudes.
