PPP stalwart Senator Taj Haider passed away

ISLAMBAD: Senior leader of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Taj Haider, from Karachi, passed away on Tuesday. Haider had been undergoing treatment at a local hospital for the past few days, according to his family.

He was re-elected to the Senate of Pakistan for a six-year term from March 2021 to March 2027.

Haider, born on March 9, 1942, was a left-wing politician, nationalist, playwright, mathematician, versatile scholar and Marxist intellectual. He was one of the founding members of the PPP and has been the party’s general secretary since 2010.

A mathematician and scientist by profession, Haider provided crucial leadership in the early years of Pakistan’s atomic bomb projects in the 1970s. He is also known for writing political dramas for Pakistan Television (PTV) from 1979 to 1985.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic death of Senator Taj Haider and offered condolences to his family.
