ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Sher Afzal Marwat has announced his return to the party after meeting the jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, here on Saturday.
Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Marwat said that he met Imran Khan after a gap of three months. He mentioned that Khan gave him a warm welcome and discussed various issues during the conversation.
Marwat also said that he has been entrusted with organizing a public meeting on August 22, in which PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan was present to witness Khan’s directive regarding the event.
Expressing his gratitude to Khan, Marwat announced that he was reconciling with the party and apologized for any comments he had made against party leaders in the past. He assured that he would now focus on holding peaceful public gatherings and refrain from indulging in violent protests.
The development came after PTI Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi announced the suspension of Sher Afzal Marwat’s party membership in a notification. However, PTI Chairman Barrister Gauhar Khan dismissed the notification as “fake”, saying it was not possible.
The PTI leadership was divided over the decision to suspend Marwat’s basic membership of the party. The notification suggested that if Marwat was honorable, he should resign from his National Assembly seat, which he won as a PTI candidate, and contest the elections again.
It is worth noting that Marwat received a show cause notice on May 11 for violating the party’s code of conduct and policy. The notice issued by PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan asked Marwat to explain his statements within three days, as they were considered damaging to the reputation of the party.
