Section 144 imposed in Diamer ahead of Gilgit-Baltistan elections

Section 144 imposed in Rawalpindi amid high security alert

CHALAS: In order to ensure law and order situation and public safety in connection with the general elections to be held tomorrow in Gilgit-Baltistan, District Magistrate Diamer Lieutenant (retd) Muhammad Owais has immediately imposed Section 144 in the entire district.

Under the regular order issued by the District Magistrate, a complete ban has been imposed on the display of all types of weapons, aerial firing, use of firecrackers, drones, quadcopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) within the limits of Diamer.

Strict action will be taken against those flying drones or carrying weapons without a written NOC. These orders will remain in force for the next 60 days, however, police personnel on official duty and other law enforcement agencies will be exempted from this.

The District Police Officer Diamer has been directed to strictly implement these orders, while the Assistant Commissioners and SDMs have been ordered to widely publicize it in Chilas, Dareel and Tangir. A copy of this order has also been sent to the Election Cell, the concerned Returning Officers and the Provincial Election Commissioner GB.

As per the Election Commission’s code of conduct, the election campaign has completely ended since 12 midnight and now the political parties and candidates are busy in final preparations for the polling day, while full efforts are being made to bring the citizens of Diamer residing in other cities to cast their votes.

To make the security of the elections foolproof, a staff of 5,000 Punjab Police personnel has also reached Gilgit-Baltistan. The total number of voters in the 4 constituencies of Diamer district is 1,58,714, in which the number of registered male voters is 81,655 and the number of female voters is 77,059.

A total of 174 polling stations and 380 polling booths have been set up in the four constituencies, out of which 119 have been declared as highly sensitive, 22 as sensitive and 33 as normal.

According to the detailed data of the constituencies, the total number of voters in GBA 15 Diamer 1 (Chalas) is 44,526 and out of the 52 polling stations set up here, 22 are highly sensitive, 12 are sensitive and 18 are normal. The highest number of voters, 46,282, will exercise their franchise in GBA 16 Diamer 2 (Chalas), where out of a total of 44 polling stations, 19 are highly sensitive and 10 are sensitive.

The total number of registered voters in GBA 17 Diamer 3 (Darel) is 41,045 and all 46 polling stations here have been declared “highly sensitive”.

Similarly, the total number of voters in GBA 18 Diamer 4 (Tangier) is 26,861 and all 32 polling stations in this constituency have been declared “highly sensitive”.
