Senior politician Mian Azhar passes away after prolonged illness

ISLAMABAD: Veteran politician and former Punjab governor Mian Azhar died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness, family sources confirmed. He was 83.

He was the father of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Hammad Azhar, and had been ill for a long time, during which he had largely been out of the public eye.

Mian Azhar served as the governor of Punjab from 1990 to 1993 and later played a key role in the founding and leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).

During his political career, he held several important portfolios and remained an influential figure in Pakistan’s political landscape.

In recent years, he had withdrawn from active politics, while his son, Hammad Azhar, emerged as a key PTI leader, serving as a federal minister in various capacities.

Condolences were expressed by political leaders and well-wishers on party lines, remembering Mian Azhar as a respected figure who played a prominent role in the country’s politics and public service.

Funeral arrangements will be announced soon by the family.
