KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced a ban on the entry of dumpers into Karachi during daytime hours, which will come into effect immediately.
According to the decision, dumpers will be allowed to enter the city only from 11 pm to 6 am.
The move is aimed at curbing the increasing number of road accidents due to heavy vehicles and improving traffic flow in the city.
Chief Secretary Sindh Asif Hyder Shah has called an emergency meeting to address traffic-related concerns.
The meeting was attended by the Inspector General Sindh Police, Commissioner Karachi, Additional IG Karachi, Secretary Transport, DIG Traffic and other officials.
It was decided that all heavy vehicles and their drivers will be physically verified to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
Furthermore, all vehicles plying in Karachi will have to obtain a QR code-verified certificate from the Transport Department.
The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board has been directed to shift its operations to night hours within three months.
Furthermore, the Chief Secretary directed the Secretary Transport to inspect all water tankers of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board within a month to ensure their safety and compliance with traffic rules.
He also stressed the importance of road safety for motorcyclists and directed the traffic police to strictly enforce the helmet wearing regulations. Reckless driving will not only result in fines but also FIRs, to ensure accountability.
He highlighted the major causes of accidents, saying that the main reason for this is the lack of enforcement of laws regarding heavy traffic.
To deal with this, the Sindh government has decided to launch the Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) across the province.
It was revealed during the meeting that 65 percent of vehicles in Karachi are motorcycles and 55 percent of all road accidents involve motorcyclists.
In response, the Chief Secretary directed the DIG Traffic to improve the traffic situation within a month and ensure strict implementation of road safety regulations.
Chief Secretary Sindh Asif Hyder Shah stressed the need for a good structure for traffic management and directed the revival of the Traffic Engineering Bureau.
