ISLAMABAD: FIFA, the international football governing body, on Thursday suspended the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) for its failure to adopt revisions in the PFF Constitution suggested by FIFA.
In a media release shared on Thursday, FIFA announced suspending PFF “with immediate effect” over the recently elected PFF congress rejected to follow the constitutional changes proposed by FIFA as part of the federation’s ongoing normalisation process.
“The PFF has been suspended with immediate effect due to its failure to adopt a revision of the PFF Constitution that would ensure truly fair and democratic elections and thereby fulfill its obligations as mandated by FIFA as part of the ongoing normalisation process of PFF,” the statement read.
The global football body said that the suspension will only be lifted subject to the PFF Congress approving the version of the PFF Constitution presented by FIFA and the AFC.
The FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) proposed amendments to be brought in clauses related to the electoral process, facilitating fair elections and proper governance.
However, during the extraordinary meeting last month, the elected congress of PFF rejected those amendments mostly related to the candidacy for the president.
FIFA had given the PFF NC till Feb 15 to conduct the elections but the rejection of the amendments by the congress put the process on hold.
Earlier, the federation faced suspension in April 2021 due to undue third-party interference, which was lifted in June 2022 after the PFF’s Normalisation Committee regained full authority over football-related matters in the country.
