ISLAMABAD: New Zealand have announced their squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan, which includes some new faces.
21-year-old Mohammad Abbas, son of former Pakistan batsman Azhar Abbas Haraj, has been included in the ODI squad for the first time. He recently scored his maiden List A century and can also contribute as a left-arm seamer.
Michael Bracewell, who is leading the Kiwis in the ongoing T20 series, will hand over the captaincy to Tom Latham for the ODI series. Fast bowler Kyle Jamieson will miss the ODIs as selectors adjust their workload after participating in the Champions Trophy and the recent T20I series against Pakistan. Additionally, fast spearhead Matt Henry is sidelined as he continues his rehabilitation process for shoulder and knee problems.
In the absence of the senior players, Will Overke will lead the sevens attack, supported by Ben Sears, Jacob Duffy and Nathan Smith. Auckland leg-spinner Aditya Ashok was recalled after last playing for New Zealand in December 2023, and is seen as a potential successor to Ish Sodhi in white-ball cricket.
New Zealand selection manager Sam Wells believes the series against Pakistan is an opportunity to test the players. “With the next ICC ODI Pinnacle event still two and a half years away, this series is a great opportunity to introduce these players to international cricket,” he said.
