ISLAMABAD: Following star batsman Babar Azam’s resignation as Pakistan’s white-ball captain, there is considerable speculation regarding his successor.

According to the reports, the candidates for this post include Test vice-captain Saud Shakeel, opener Fakhar Zaman and all-rounder Salman Ali Agha.

Reports also suggest that despite having leadership experience, wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan and fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi are unlikely to be considered for the role.

The reason for Saud Shakeel’s idea is to take over as Test vice-captain from Rizwan during Pakistan’s recent series against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Fakhar Zaman, known or his explosive batting, is also one of the leading candidates for the job. In contrast, Salman Ali Agha is yet to captain any team at the domestic level.

After Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the World Cup last November, the role of Pakistan captain has been constantly changing, after which Babar Azam stepped down.

After that Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Shaheen Afridi as T20 captain and Shan Masood as Test captain. Shaheen’s tenure as captain was then cut short when Babar returned to lead the white-ball team in March that year, only to step down once more.

Babar Azam’s recent resignation has once again left the captaincy position open with talks of the next man being the most talked about in recent times.
