CALIFORNIA: YouTube, an online video-sharing platform has launched a new feature linking parents’ accounts with their kids, making it easier for parents to stay involved in their teens’ digital activities.
YouTube’s new update is designed to help parents supervise their teens while still granting them the freedom to explore the platform.
The feature, part of YouTube’s new Family Centre hub, is now rolling out globally. It enables parents to see the general information about their kids’ channels, including how many videos they’ve uploaded, the channels they’re subscribed to, and the comments they’re posting.
Notifications will also be sent to both linked accounts, for example, when a new video is uploaded to the platform or a live broadcast starts parents will also get email notifications.
YouTube calls this the “first iteration,” which builds on the tools it already has to monitor children’s accounts, as well as develop new features that will provide deeper insight into a child’s activity.
YouTube also states that this feature allows for “mutual control,” meaning that the child can turn this feature off on their end at any time.
