DHAKA: A recent public opinion poll conducted in Bangladesh for the 13th national parliamentary elections to be held on February 12 has predicted a close contest between the BNP and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led coalition.
Bangladeshi media reported that the poll predicted that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led coalition would get 44.1 percent of the vote, while the 11-party electoral alliance led by the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami could get 43.9 percent.
The survey was conducted among 63,115 voters across the country, including 36,634 men and 26,981 women.
According to the survey, 92 percent of respondents said they planned to vote, while 4.4 percent said they would not vote and 2.5 percent said they were undecided.
Although the BNP alliance has a slight lead in the proportion of total votes, the survey shows that the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance is ahead in the constituencies where the result is considered almost certain.
According to the survey, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance can get a clear victory in 105 constituencies, while the BNP alliance can get a clear lead in 101 seats.
In addition, a tight competition is expected between the candidates of the two major alliances in 75 constituencies, while the candidates of other political parties are likely to win in 19 constituencies.
