MALÉ: The Maldives government had declared a public holiday for the entire week of Eid ul Fitr on the instructions of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
A statement issued by the President’s Office confirmed that if the Ministry of Islamic Affairs announces the 1st of Shawwal on March 31, 2025, the public holidays will continue from March 31 to April 3, 2025.
If Eid ul-Fitr falls on March 30, the public holidays would have been shifted to March 30, 31 and April 1. The President ensured that regardless of the official date of Eid, the Eid holidays will continue until April 3, to provide employees with uninterrupted time to celebrate and spend time with their families.
Muizzu had emphasized that government offices will reopen on April 6, 2025, after the break, after Friday and Saturday. The move was designed to allow citizens an extended period for religious observance and family gatherings during the holy festival.
Furthermore, the government had decided to close for the last 10 days of Ramadan starting March 20. The decision was made in line with the president’s annual policy of granting the holiday during this time to promote Islamic practices and give the public an opportunity to focus on religious duties.
President Muizzu also noted that despite the holidays, government institutions were instructed to maintain essential services during the break.
