SPAIN: The total solar eclipse of 2026 will be visible on August 12, Spain will see a total view for the first time since 1905. A total solar eclipse will be seen in various parts of the world, including Europe, Greenland and Iceland, on August 12, 2026, while in northern Spain this view will be completely visible for the first time since 1905.
According to astronomers, it is being considered one of the most important astronomical events in recent years and will also be broadcast live. The eclipse path will be approximately 5,157 miles long, starting from the Arctic coast and passing through the North Pole, Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain.
The total eclipse in Greenland will last for about two minutes, while in northern Spain this duration will be less than 20 seconds. A partial solar eclipse will also be visible in large areas of Africa, Europe and North America. According to the European Space Agency, the last total solar eclipse in Europe was in 2006, while this will be the first total solar eclipse in Spain in August since 1905.
Experts say that three major solar eclipses are expected by 2028, and the 2026 eclipse will be the first of them. According to the space agency, a live video of the eclipse will be broadcast from the Javea Lamber Astronomical Observatory in Spain so that fans around the world can watch this astronomical spectacle safely.
NASA has instructed that special ‘eclipse glasses’ or solar viewers must be used during the total phase, in addition to the total phase, while ordinary sunglasses do not provide eye protection. In case of using a telescope, camera or binoculars, it will be mandatory to apply an approved solar filter to them.
Scientists are also planning to take pictures of the moon’s shadow using balloons on this occasion, an experiment that would be similar to the historic scientific observation of 1919 that strengthened the theory of light bending due to the Sun’s gravity.
