229 industrial units shut down in KP amid political unrest

PESHAWAR: According to a recent tally, a total of 229 industrial units have been shut down in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to growing unrest and lack of government support in last few months.

As many as 2,563 industrial units have been established in the provinceof which 177 units in KPEZMEC and 52 units in  Gadoon Economic Zone have been closed.

Currently, 2,010 industrial units are operational in the various industrial zones, while 324 units are under construction,  showing an attempt to strengthen the sector despite the challenges.

It is not that the closure of industrial units has been witnessed only in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; last year the Sindh Assembly was informed that 81 industrial units, including 10 textile mills and five sugar mills, shut down during the past five years due to the lingering electricity crisis.

The provincial government was extending cooperation to industrialists as 6,856 industrial units remained operational across the province, and 915 new units were established. However, the closure of units including 10 textile mills and a cement factory  reflected the challenges that still need to be resolved with full support to the industrial sector.
